The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) played a dominate role in segregating Long Island through its lending processes. The FHA’s practice of redlining limited financing to some neighborhoods based on racial makeup. The FHA argued that this process was necessary to secure raising values on its investments. Other race-based lending practices included having local banks collectively freeze funds on certain areas and developments. One example of frozen funds of a construction project was the Amityville Lawns development. This development was organized by the black-owned C&D Cement Company. The development had a goal of constructing 211 to 294 houses and marketing them as an integrated community. Pictured here are the lobby and loan processing department of the National Bank of Hicksville.
